North Norway’s Providence of Nordland is a seemingly endless island world with giant fjords, immense plains, and remote mountain borders. The landscape in Northern Norway is ceaselessly varied, unspoiled, magnificent, awe-inspiring and beautiful; the perfect backdrop for a month-long sea kayak expedition.
Nordland, Norway a sea kayaking eldorado, to the west lie the islands some only visible at low tide others tower more than a thousand meters above the sea. A long Helgeland’s coast there are thousands of tiny islands tens of kilometers from the shore whereas most are flat, but some rise up in strange mountain formations. The Lofoten Islands, dark violet, ancient craggy peaks rise like pyramids; these large islands lie like miniature continents with their mountains, forests and agricultural land, surrounded by the seaways of this awe-inspiring archipelago. Steeped in myths, sagas, fairy tales, and folklore Nordland’s many famous landmarks have contributed to these telling’s, Torghatten, Seven Sisters of Alsten, Hestmannen, Rødøyløve, Landego, Vestfjorden & Vågakallen are just a few that we will discover while paddling Nordland’s spectacular coast.
The Nordland Sea Kayak challenge begins at the southernmost end of the providence where we paddle North to the Northern border of the Troms, Providence in the Lofoten Islands. We meet in Brønnøysund, Nordland’s most southern city. Brønnøysund is a quaint coastal city that once was a major trading center on the sailing route from Bergen to the Lofoten Islands; it is here we do the final preparations of our sea kayak journey through Nordland.
The Nordland Challenge is unlike any other sea kayaking trip. There is no set route, planned stopping places or scheduled overnight campsites. This is a journey, a discovery in its truest sense with everyday unique and undetermined waiting to unfold as we navigate our way through numerous archipelagos, fjords & charming northern settlements
Your KMT expedition leader will lay out a general plan for the challenge with sectional breakdowns and daily objectives. You will discover hidden places and uncover the secrets of this ancient coastal culture. You will camp, stay in cabins, guesthouses, and rorbus and enjoy camp meals, picnics, and local specialty dishes prepared by the region’s best chefs as you paddle your way north.

The glistening waterways surrounding Ålesund entice and adventure beckons! Sea Kayaking Norway – 8 Days Sea Kayaking in Lofoten Islands
These impressively scenic islands form an archipelago one hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle. It is a place of mystical landscapes illuminated by nearly continuous daylight. Glacially carved, shear granite spires rise out of a sea made rich by the meeting of the warm Gulf Stream and the Arctic Ocean. The Islands are fringed with green pastureland and dotted with picturesque fishing villages each with its own unique character and dramatic mountain backdrop. This is a true Arctic sea kayaking adventure with the advantage of finishing every day with a hot shower and a warm bed.
You’ll kayak the length of this remarkable chain of islands through indigo-blue fjords cutting between jagged peaks, stopping at white sand beaches and hiking to viewpoints for incredible panoramic vistas. ÅLESUND’S BEST SELLING TRIP! Gliding out onto Borgund Fjord, the sky opens revealing the city skyline, historical buildings, and a spectacular archipelago all chiseled on a seemingly painted backdrop of the majestic Sunnmøre Alps.
The glittering waters of Borgund fjord beacon us as our kayaks glide over the rippling water. We explore a magical string of islands along the north shore before crossing to the southern shore with its intricate maze of islands, here we enjoy a homemade picnic lunch on a private island. Then slipping back on the water, our exploration continues until we find our way back to our staging site.
Fjords, Islands & Sounds Route
Escape the city! Head to Borgund Fjord, keeping the southern city sights, sounds, and smells on our left, we paddle its glistening waters; float through Nørve Sound to the entrance of Ellingsøyfjord with its fairytale islands. We enjoy a wholesome picnic lunch on a lush green island seemingly miles from urbanization.
Jumping on the water again heading west with Ålesund still on our left, we complete our circumnavigation passing by her northern harbor guarded by its 175-year-old navigational beacon and the last remaining buildings of Old Ålesund, we seek out the Asp Island bridge the entrance to Ålesund’s Southern harbor.
Our kayaks glide easily through the harbor, past a 103-year-old historical landmark, and on towards our take-out point; finally, with the city’s southern skyline chiseled on a seemingly painted backdrop of the majestic Sunnmøre Alps, our landing site comes into view.

The stage is set. Our driver picks you up at your accommodation for the short drive to our launching site. Our chosen route benefits from the glorious western sky facing the North Atlantic; calm seas and island hopping await as we paddle Ålesund’s fjords. Fjord Serenity

Kayak Ålesund’s Fjords & Hike Sugar Summit
Borgund Fjord’s infinite sky opens, exposing Sula Mountain and the Sunnmøre Alps. We glide across this famous fjord to the secret archipelago at the eastern end of Hessa fjord. From here a 103-year-old landmark, Slinningsbua, is our bearing as we slip across.
Gazing westward out to the infinite waters of the North Atlantic, we glide down Hessa Fjord past ancient farmland delightfully mixed with ultra-modern homes to the trailhead of Sugar Summit.
Upon landing at the trailhead take-out, a rejuvenating snack energizes us before we set out for the summit. The trail is well-trodden as we make our way diligently upward to the summit where we refuel on hearty sandwiches and enjoy the 360-degree view of Western Norway and its Art Nouveau city.

At the Southeast of Ålesund’s Art Nouveau City Centre lies the famous Borgund Fjord; it is here that the ancient cod fishery still flourishes to this day. Out here, our expert guides lead you to their favorite and highly secret fishing spots.
The Ultimate Exploration Of Norway’s Art Nouveau City
Our day begins by paddling across Ålesund’s southern fjords. Landing on the beach at Sand Bay, we gear up to go exploring on Sula Mountain, Ålesund’s highest peaks. Picking up the trail we make our way upwards climbing higher and higher, passing Blåfjellet at 344m; from here we find the perfect lunch spot at Grøt Horn (650m), where we refuel on hearty sandwiches before continuing our exploration of Sula Mountain and taking in all her infinite stunning views.
After hiking for about five hours, we return to the beach and our waiting kayaks; giving our legs a rest, we set off for our staging site.
Ålesund’s Original Sea Kayak Excursion
Ålesund’s southern harbor and it’s famous Borgund fjord are the scene from Ålesund’s original sea kayak excursion. Good fun and great paddling await as our internationally certified sea kayak guides lead you down Borgund fjord to the ‘first settlement,’ Borgundkaupangen.
Historical landmarks, dating back over 100 years, the city’s skyline and the glistening waters of mighty Borgund Fjord are seemingly painted on backdrop of the majestic, snow-capped Sunnmøre Alps.
Our kayaks glide easily over the rippling fjord waters as we marvel in our serene surroundings and take advantage of countless photo ops, as your guides share tales and stories of western Norway and its coastal culture.
Paddle Svolvær to Henningsvær
Depart the safety of the Fisherman’s Wife zigzag our way through the rocky maze to where the expanse of mighty West Fjord looms on the horizon. Our sights are set on the gap that will lead us to paradise, as we round Bremholla, Paradise is on our right.
Feeling small in Bremholm Sound as the famous landmark, Vågakallen looms above us we inch our way up the sound to kjerringa with Gullvika beckoning us in the distance; wemake a left and head for Litj-Nons Island and head up ‘Mainstreet’ Henningsvær.
We take-out at a pier on ‘Mainstreet’ where a cold beer and a steaming bowl of Bacalao await us. We unwind from a fantastic paddle as the sounds and sights of Henningsvær’s bustling harbor fill our senses while we refuel on the freshest cod anywhere.

Paddle Raft Sound & Troll Fjord
Raft Sound marks the eastern most boundary to the Lofoten Islands; runs North-South separating Norway’s largest island, Hinnøya from Austvåg Island, and the rest of the Lofoten Archipelago.
We will spend the day exploring the sound, playing in it’s currents and gliding down the infamous Troll Fjord. An angry troll is said to have chopped Trollfjord out of the Raftsund Alps!
From our launching spot on the banks of Raft Sound we will paddle beneath the jagged peaks of the the Raftsund Alps, stopping for a delicious Al Fresco picnic lunch deep in Trollfjord.
Paddle to the Beaches of ‘The Little Molla’
Mighty West Fjord awaits, feeling small as we leave the protected waters of Svolvær. We aim our kayaks to the mountainous islands to the West and start paddling across Høla, the section of West Fjord separating Svolvær from Skrova.
The mountains grow larger with every stroke of our paddles and our kayaks slice easily through the water; we are elated to have crossed over Høla to the island of Litlmolla. Here we spend the day beach hopping and swimming (if you dare) a delicious al fresco picnic lunch refuels us for the crossing back to Svolvær, and the glimpse of the Lofoten Islands stretching Westward into the North Atlantic is a sight that is not easily forgotten.
Paddle East Lofoten & the Svellingen Islands
Our day begins by sliding through Valrenna, Lofoten’s only man-made canal, (a historic feat at allowed fishermen safe passage from East Lofoten to the markets of West Lofoten.) through the canal we make our way out of Pundslett Bay and across Holand Sound to the ‘thousand islands of Svellingen’. This island mecca reveals innumerable beaches, abundant wildlife (sea eagles, cormorants, porpoises, seals……) and crystal-clear waters. We make our way to Risvær, once a bustling fishing community, now only hosts a handful of summer dwellers.
We find the perfect island well suited for an el fresco picnic lunch. As we climb out of our kayaks and welcome the rocky sand under our feet as we stretch of our legs. After a relaxing lunch we launch from our island and make our way through this maze of islands to Risvær, once a bustling fishing community, now only hosts a handful of summer dwellers.
We try our luck a fishing as we make our way back to Valrenna canal, where our transport awaits.
Paddle the Outside & the Laukvika Bird Sanctuary
Out here a small archipelago is a protected sanctuary for sea birds and as well is a sea life refuge.
We launch from the hamlet of Laukvik and point our kayaks out of the marina towards the open sea before gliding into a maze of islands. Here we float and bob along watching playful seals and soaring sea eagles, we grab our phones/cameras and try to capture these magnificent creatures on our memory cards before we pull up on a wonderful white-sandy beach for a delicious al fresco picnic lunch.
After lunch we continue our exploration of these numerous islands filled with white sandy beaches, Arctic birds, and seal colonies, before we make our way by to the Hamlet of Laukvik where cold refreshments await.
Brønnøysund’s Arctic Archipelago
Slide out onto the cobalt blue waters of Brønn Sound, otherwise know as ‘Mainstreet Brønnøysund’. We’re drawn to the landmark Brønnøy bridge connecting the archipelago with mainland Norway as our kayaks drift out onto the famous Torg Fjord.
The glittering waters of Torg fjord beacon us as our kayaks glide over the rippling water. Exploring this intricate maze of islands, bobbing in and out of picturesque bays, inlets, and coves before landing on a divine beach where we enjoy a homemade picnic lunch on a private island. Then slipping back on the water our exploration continues until we find our way back to our staging site.
